Expert Advice

The Greater Toronto Apartment Association professional staff is always available to provide members with general guidance on questions of substance and industry related issues. With solid expertise on all multifamily housing issues, these professional resources are invaluable when members prepare to interact with government, the media, and other stakeholders in the rental housing industry.

Brad Butt, President, has over twenty years of direct industry related experience as well as considerable political expertise, to assist members in their interaction with municipal officials on a wide range of issues. As well, members of the association’s Board of Directors have cumulative experience of more than 200 years working in the rental housing industry and provide excellent leadership and advice to all members.

The membership is comprised of the leading organizations and individuals participating in all aspects of the multifamily housing industry. The Greater Toronto Apartment Association offers members an invaluable opportunity to gather together, to discuss issues of common interest, to hear local and nationally recognized speakers, and to share business insights. The Annual General Meeting for all members is held in October every year, and the Board of Directors meets bi-monthly, standing committees organize ongoing events throughout the year and provide excellent forums and opportunities for the exchange of ideas, business models and planning new strategies.


Codes, By-laws, Regulations & Legislation

The Greater Toronto Apartment Association will inform member firms early on how actions by the respective municipal governments and other agencies affect the multifamily industry's costs and operations. It will alert members to important proposals to change Codes and Laws, inform members of legislative changes to the rental housing sector, and interpret the practical impact of major decisions.

Regular Alerts are sent exclusively to members advising them of changes to these laws and regulations.


Laws Affecting Rental Housing

Rental housing is one of the most regulated industries in Ontario.  Further, municipal governments can affect the way in which apartment properties are managed through their by-law and regulatory powers.  There are a number of very important statutes and by-laws that affect rental housing which are listed below.
